Roger stevens12/25/2023 ![]() Rogers' father died when he was a teenager and his mother died from pneumonia years later after he had joined the military.ĭuring the Vietnam War, Rogers tried to enlist in the United States Army but he was rejected because of his frailty. The son of Irish immigrants, Steve grew up a scrawny kid in a poor home with his little brother John, but a strong sense of duty, honor, and humility was still instilled in them both. I listened to Roger all of my life and his advice to me was always true. I have known Roger since I was 14 years old and he helped me navigate difficult teenage years with seasoned wisdom, humor and a genuine care for who I was. All who have met Roger would agree with me. If ever Old Orchard Beach had a Sage, it was Roger. He is survived by his wife Cindy Stevens of Old Orchard Beach, his son Jesse Stevens of Old Orchard Beach, his daughter Holly Hennigar of Boston, MA and husband Nicholas, three brothers Joseph Stevens of Old Orchard Beach, Richard Stevens of Old Orchard Beach and wife Patricia and Gary Stevens of Fort Kent and wife Doris, two sisters Alice Leveris of Old Orchard Beach and husband Arthur and Anne Riley of South Middleboro, MA and husband Joseph. He will be deeply missed by many and all who loved him. He brought lots of happiness to others and lived a great life. He spent lots of time with his family and friends, days at the beach, camping, town sporting events and get togethers. He married Cindy Harmon of Saco, Maine in 1981 and had two children, his son Jesse and daughter Holly. Roger met his wife Cindy on the beach in 1972. Roger was a member of the Old Orchard Beach Conservation Committee and oversaw the Maine Plover Project in OOB. He took great enjoyment in clamming, fishing, chopping wood, telling jokes and keeping busy outdoors. He loved his job and he loved working for the Town. He worked for 37 years with the Public Works Department of Old Orchard Beach. He was also trained as an Imjin Scout, participating in reconnaissance patrols within the DMZ.Īfter his service, he returned home to Maine. Roger was a Sergeant in the Second Infantry Division, overseeing a howitzer in an artillery battalion that was stationed along the DMZ in Korea. After high school, he moved out West and attended Costa Mesa Community College in California before being drafted into the U.S. He was a graduate of Old Orchard Beach High School, Class of 1966. He grew up in Old Orchard with his five siblings, Joseph, Alice, Richard, Gary and Anne. Roger was born in Biddeford on April 23rd, 1948, the son of Ralph and Amelia Stevens. Roger brought joy to many and enhanced the life of his friends and family in countless ways. ![]() Those who knew him will miss him greatly. He loved his family, neighbors and the community of Old Orchard Beach. He kept a positive demeanor right to the end and definitely kept his sense of humor. Although the last few months of his life were very difficult, he took great solace in watching the birds and enjoying the company of his family. He had been battling cancer on and off for the past three years. Stevens, 73, passed away on Saturday May 8th, 2021 at his home with his family by his side.
